7 best SonarQube alternatives (2026): pricing and AI review

· · 10 min read

SonarQube checks code against thousands of static rules and blocks a merge when new code fails its quality gate. The SonarQube alternatives below split into two groups: static analysis and security scanners that do a similar job (Semgrep, Snyk Code, Codacy, DeepSource), and AI pull request reviewers that read a change the way a colleague would (HeyDeer, CodeRabbit, Qodo). Prices are as of November 2026.

The best SonarQube alternatives are HeyDeer, Semgrep, Snyk Code, Codacy, DeepSource, CodeRabbit and Qodo. For security rules, Semgrep and Snyk Code are the closest match; for an all-in-one quality tool, Codacy. For AI review of every pull request, HeyDeer has the highest ReviewBench precision (99.0%) and charges no seat fees.

SonarQube alternatives compared

The column that matters most is what each tool checks. Static analysis applies fixed rules and gives the same answer every time. An LLM reviewer reads the change and the code around it and writes comments in prose.

The alternatives, one by one

1. HeyDeer: AI pull request review with the highest precision

Strengths: HeyDeer is an AI pull request reviewer, not a static analyzer. It reviews every pull request against the whole repository, whether a person or a coding agent wrote it, and checks each finding against your code before posting it. That verification step is where its 99.0% precision on ReviewBench’s default high-severity view comes from, the highest on the leaderboard. Fewer wrong comments matter most when coding agents act on every comment they get.

The closest thing HeyDeer has to a SonarQube rule is a repository check: a requirement written in plain English in .agents/checks/*.md, scoped to the files it covers. Each matching check gets a reviewer of its own on every pull request that touches those files, and its findings name the check. A rule like “every call to chargeCard() passes an idempotency key” is hard to express as a static pattern and easy to write as a check. HeyDeer can also draft checks from your repository and its past pull requests. Reviews follow your REVIEW.md and AGENTS.md too, and Fix with HeyDeer opens a fix for the findings you pick.

Pricing: a recurring Free plan (1,000 credits in the first month, then 300 a month), then Starter at $9 and Pro at $39 a month per workspace. Every plan includes unlimited developers and repositories, so cost follows review volume, not headcount.

Fits: GitHub teams that want a reviewer for logic, edge cases and their own conventions, either beside SonarQube’s quality gate or in place of it when the gate was only ever used as a reviewer. The method behind the precision score is in our ReviewBench results.

2. Semgrep

Strengths: a security platform with three products, Code (SAST), Supply Chain (dependency scanning) and Secrets, plus AI-assisted triage of the findings. Rules are written to look like the code they match, so security teams add their own quickly.

Pricing: per contributor a month, where a contributor is anyone who committed to a private repository in the last 90 days. On Teams, Code and Supply Chain cost $30 each and Secrets $15 per contributor a month. The free tier covers up to 10 contributors and 10 private repositories with 60 AI credits.

Fits: teams that used SonarQube mainly for security findings and want deeper SAST, dependency and secrets coverage with rules they can write themselves.

3. Snyk Code

Strengths: the SAST part of the Snyk platform, next to Snyk’s dependency and container scanning, so one dashboard covers code and what it depends on.

Pricing: the Free plan covers up to 5 projects and 100 Snyk Code tests a month. Team starts at $25 a month for up to 10 developers, with 1,000 tests a month. Enterprise uses credits at $1 each; Snyk Code costs 1 credit per active contributor per day.

Fits: teams already on Snyk for open-source dependencies that want code scanning from the same vendor.

4. Codacy

Strengths: a close match for SonarQube’s feature set: static analysis for quality and security with merge gates, and an AI Reviewer on the Team plan, so rule-based and AI checks arrive from one tool.

Pricing: per developer seat. The Developer plan is $0 and covers the IDE, CLI and local scanning. Team costs $18 per developer a month billed yearly ($21 monthly) for up to 30 developers and includes AI Reviewer and merge gates. Business is a custom quote, and open-source projects get Team for free.

Fits: small and mid-sized teams that want a SonarQube-style quality dashboard with AI review included, and are comfortable paying per seat.

5. DeepSource

Strengths: static analysis with an AI Review option at two depths, Standard and Advanced, billed by the lines it processes. Enterprise can be self-hosted.

Pricing: Team is $24 per user a month billed yearly and includes $100 a year of AI Review credit. AI Review then costs $8 (Standard) or $15 (Advanced) per 10,000 processed lines. The Open Source plan is free for public repositories, with 1,000 pull request reviews a month and AI Review paid as you go.

Fits: teams that want static analysis and AI review from one vendor, or need a self-hosted deployment.

6. CodeRabbit

Strengths: an AI pull request reviewer on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps, including self-hosted versions, that also reviews in the IDE and CLI. Every paid plan includes a security review built on static analysis, secrets, dependency and infrastructure checks, so it covers part of what a scanner does.

Pricing: per developer who opens pull requests: Essentials $24, Team $48 and Advanced $72 a month on annual billing ($30, $60 and $90 monthly). Reviews are free on public repositories, and paid plans have a 14-day trial.

Fits: teams spread across several Git hosts who want one AI reviewer everywhere. More options are in our CodeRabbit alternatives and HeyDeer vs CodeRabbit.

7. Qodo

Strengths: AI code review metered from a shared credit pool, with support for the major Git hosts. On ReviewBench’s default view it scores 95.3% precision and 53.3% recall.

Pricing: credits cost $0.012 each. Pro Team starts at $30 a month for 2,500 credits, which Qodo puts at about 18 reviews. Enterprise is custom, for 30 or more users. New accounts get a 14-day trial, and qualifying open-source projects can apply for free access.

Fits: teams that want usage-based AI review on GitLab, Bitbucket or Azure DevOps. HeyDeer vs Qodo

Where SonarQube itself fits

SonarQube pricing and free plans

SonarQube Community Build is free and open source, with 21 supported languages. SonarQube Cloud Free is free for private projects up to 50,000 lines of code. Cloud Team starts at $34 a month for up to 100,000 lines (previously listed at $65), for teams under 50 developers, and Cloud Enterprise is annual and quoted by sales. The self-managed Developer, Enterprise and Data Center editions of SonarQube Server are priced per instance per year by lines of code, with no published list price, as of November 2026. Lines of code are counted across all analyzed projects, excluding blank lines, comments and tests.

SonarQube bills by lines of code, not by people. A large team with a small codebase pays little; a small team with a large monorepo pays more. Seat-based alternatives such as Codacy, DeepSource and CodeRabbit follow headcount instead, Semgrep follows active contributors, and HeyDeer follows review volume.

How SonarQube code review works on a pull request

SonarQube compares a pull request with the latest scan of its target branch and reports only the issues the pull request introduces. It decorates the pull request with the quality gate status and a summary on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket Cloud and Azure DevOps, with inline annotations depending on the platform, and a failed gate can block the merge. Only the gate’s new-code conditions apply. On SonarQube Server, branch and pull request analysis with decoration starts at Developer Edition.

SonarQube AI features

  • AI CodeFix suggests a fix for an issue the rules found. It’s on Cloud Team and Enterprise and on Server Enterprise and Data Center, where it can use a self-hosted LLM.
  • AI Code Assurance applies a default quality gate, project labels and public badges to projects you mark as containing AI-generated code. It’s on every Cloud plan, Free included, and on Server from Developer Edition.
  • SonarQube MCP Server gives coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI and GitHub Copilot access to analysis, issues, quality gates and security hotspots, on Server or Cloud. Sonar calls it free; it’s released under the SONAR Source-Available License.
  • Gitar AI code review. Sonar acquired Gitar on May 21, 2026. Gitar is an AI code review and validation platform that fixes code, bugs and CI failures in GitHub and GitLab pull requests. It stays available on its own and can be bought with SonarQube; the pricing page lists it at $20 per user a month billed annually on the Team tier, with outcome-based per-PR pricing on Enterprise.

So SonarQube now offers AI pull request review too, through Gitar, beside its rule engine. Apart from Gitar, its core engine is rule-based: AI CodeFix fixes issues the rules already found rather than reviewing the change as a whole.

SonarQube still fits teams that need a quality gate on coverage and duplication, OWASP or MISRA reports, many languages including COBOL and ABAP, or a self-managed server. For those teams the question is less which tool replaces SonarQube than which reviewer to put next to it.

How to choose a SonarQube alternative

Rule-based static analysis and an AI reviewer answer different questions. Rules ask “does this code match a known bad pattern?” and answer the same way every time, which is what a merge gate needs. An AI reviewer asks “does this change do what it’s meant to, and what does it break?”, the question a senior colleague asks. Many teams keep a SAST tool or quality gate and add an AI pull request reviewer on top. Our guide to how AI code review works covers what each catches and misses.

  1. Name the job SonarQube does for you today. If it’s security findings, compare Semgrep and Snyk Code. If it’s a quality dashboard and merge gate, Codacy or DeepSource. If it’s standing in for a reviewer, an AI reviewer is built for that job.
  2. Check your Git host. HeyDeer works on GitHub. CodeRabbit and Qodo also cover GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps.
  3. Price the way your team grows. Lines of code (SonarQube), contributors (Semgrep), seats (Codacy, DeepSource, CodeRabbit), credits (Qodo) or one workspace plan (HeyDeer) each favor a different team shape.
  4. Turn your conventions into checks. Rules a linter can’t express, like “payments are idempotent”, fit a HeyDeer repository check written in plain English.
  5. Measure precision on your own pull requests. A reviewer whose comments are often wrong costs more time than it saves. Run two tools on the same ten pull requests with our evaluation guide, and see the best AI code review tools ranked by ReviewBench precision.

A common setup in 2026: SonarQube, Semgrep or Snyk Code runs in CI as the deterministic gate for security and quality rules, and an AI reviewer comments on every pull request for logic, edge cases and team conventions. Each one answers questions the other doesn’t ask.

Frequently asked questions

Is SonarQube free?

Partly. SonarQube Community Build is free and open source and supports 21 languages, and SonarQube Cloud has a Free plan for private projects up to 50,000 lines of code. SonarQube Cloud Team starts at $34 a month for up to 100,000 lines, and the self-managed Developer, Enterprise and Data Center editions are priced per instance per year by lines of code, through Sonar’s sales team (as of November 2026).

Does SonarQube do code review?

SonarQube analyzes each pull request against its rules and decorates it with the quality gate status and new issues on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket Cloud and Azure DevOps. A failed gate can block the merge. Only issues the pull request introduces are reported. On SonarQube Server, pull request analysis starts at Developer Edition.

Does SonarQube have AI code review?

Yes, through Gitar, an AI code review and validation platform Sonar acquired on May 21, 2026. Sonar’s pricing page lists Gitar AI Code Review at $20 per user a month billed annually on the Team tier, with per-PR pricing on Enterprise. SonarQube also offers AI CodeFix, which suggests fixes for issues its rules find, and AI Code Assurance, a quality gate for projects that contain AI-generated code.

What is the best free SonarQube alternative?

For security rules, Semgrep is free for up to 10 contributors and 10 private repositories, and Snyk Code’s free plan covers 5 projects and 100 tests a month. Codacy’s Developer plan is free for IDE, CLI and local scans. For AI pull request review, HeyDeer’s Free plan is a recurring plan for unlimited developers, and CodeRabbit reviews public repositories for free.

SonarQube vs AI code review: which do I need?

Many teams use both. SonarQube applies the same deterministic rules to every change and enforces a quality gate, which suits standards, coverage and compliance reporting. An AI reviewer reads the pull request in the context of the repository and comments on logic, edge cases and intent that rules don’t express. Keep the gate, and add an AI reviewer for the questions a person would ask.

Is SonarQube AI CodeFix free?

AI CodeFix is part of SonarQube Cloud Team and Enterprise and SonarQube Server Enterprise and Data Center. SonarQube Server can run it on a self-hosted LLM instead of Sonar’s.

Does HeyDeer replace SonarQube?

HeyDeer is an AI pull request reviewer for GitHub. It can run beside SonarQube, or take over pull request review for teams that need a reviewer more than a rule set. Teams that rely on SonarQube for coverage gates, compliance reports or many languages on other Git hosts usually keep it and add HeyDeer for review.
